If you're in the market for a digital stage piano, you'll definitely want to check out the Yamaha P-255. The P-255 packs Yamaha's Graded Hammer action and Synthetic Ivory Keytops with the sound of their CFIIIS concert grand piano. Stereo speakers provide plenty of volume for small venues, and Sound Boost mode helps you cut through even the densest live mix.
The black P-255B from Yamaha is an 88-key digital piano that features the company's Pure CF Sound Engine (same engine as found on the Clavinova pianos) and a GH (Graded Hammer) keyboard that together deliver a genuine piano playing experience. Source samples were taken from Yamaha's concert grand pianos resulting in an authentic grand piano sound with dynamic bass, warm mid-range and clear highs. The instrument is housed in a slim and elegant cabinet.
The piano sound reproduction features three enhancements that further support the authenticity. Key-off sampling reproduces the slight change in sound at the instant when fingers are removed from the keys with different key-off sounds produced for staccato and sostenuto playing. Sustain sampling recreates the resonance of the soundboard and strings when the damper pedal is used and is further dependent on how much the pedal is pressed down. Finally, string resonance reproduces the sound of other strings resonating when a particular note is struck.
A regular grand piano uses different-sized hammers for the different-sized strings with subsequent differing weights. The GH keyboard utilizes technology to reproduce the true "feel" of a grand piano keyboard action, with heavier touch in the lower keys, lighter touch in the higher keys, and subtle gradations of weight and response throughout. Dual amplifiers drive two built-in high-performance speakers. Ideas and performances can be shared or stored utilizing an optional USB flash drive via the rear panel USB connector. And dual headphone outputs allow for quiet student/teacher lessons or for playing duets.

Thanks to its highly portable design, this digital piano can be played in any place or setting you desire. The Yamaha P-255 contemporary digital piano is for all musicians looking for an instrument suitable for both serious practice and live performance. Thanks to its portable design and built-in speaker system, the P-255 can be played in any place or setting you desire, with or without external amplification. And with the first-of-its-kind Controller App for iOS, you can customize your piano sound or quickly adjust your favorite settings with touch-screen ease-of-use.
Despite its slim, portable design, the P-255 offers a full range of performance capabilities. In terms of keyboard, piano voices, and sound reinforcement, this is the very best digital piano in the P-Series. Whether you’re already an expert or new to the piano, you’ll love playing this instrument.
The P-255 uses the Pure CF Sound Engine to produce its piano Voices. As the only digital piano in our P-Series to feature the following three functions, the P-255 can also recreate the characteristic acoustics of the grand piano sound in a more realistic fashion. Key-off Samples- This feature reproduces the slight change in sound at the instant you remove your fingers from the keys. What’s more, different key-off sounds are produced for staccato and legato playing. Sustain Sampling- The resonance of the soundboard and strings heard when the damper pedal is used has been sampled in order to recreate this acoustic effect. The P-255 responds to how deep you depress the pedal. String Resonance- When the hammer of a grand piano strikes its string, the other strings will also resonate. The P-255 can reproduce this effect using its String Resonance feature.
With a heavier touch in the low keys and a lighter touch in the high keys, the Graded Hammer (GH) action makes the P-255 feel and respond more like a real grand piano. Additionally, the white keys feature synthetic ivory keytops with excellent moisture absorption properties. This means that your fingers won't slip even when playing for extended periods of time.
The P-255’s circular speakers vibrate in a highly natural manner to produce a well-balanced tone. Thanks to this design, lower notes in particular have a much richer sound than on pianos with oval speakers. The P-255 also features built-in tweeters aimed directly at the performer, so that higher notes sound brighter. Also, the pair of 15W amps built into each P-255 can deliver a very powerful sound.
The P-255 is the only instrument from our P-Series that offers functions to conveniently customize the Voice, volume and tone settings based on the environment in which you’re playing.
At the touch of a button, you can easily make the sound of the P-255 louder and enhance its presence. Does the audience have difficulty hearing your piano playing over the mix of a band or small combo? No problem. Sound Boost allows for a clear-sounding performance that will cut through any mix. This feature affects both the internal speakers and external amplification.
The P-255 is equipped with EQ sliders—one each for the low, mid and high frequency ranges. By simply moving these sliders, you can easily adjust the digital piano‘s sound to your liking or to better suit the current song or acoustic environment. You can produce bright and shimmering tones that are clear and highly present or powerful sounds that pack a punch
