What would happen if you took the storied tone of a Jazz Bass, but gave it a Precision Bass makeover? The Squier Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 answers that question. This costumed J Bass borrows its look from a mid-1950’s P bass, featuring its distinctive sprawling pickguard and vintage-style control plate. But it’s sound is all J — snarling, but sweet, and drenched in rich harmonics. Bassists at Music Experience were all over Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 as soon as it came through our doors, and, they were more than excited about this twist on two treasured classics. Always wanted a J and P? Now you can have both with the Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 from Squier!

Squier Paranormal Jazz Bass '54 at a Glance:

  • Jazz Bass tone and playability, 1954 Precision Bass styling
  • Fender-Designed alnico single-coil pickups
  • Dual concentric volume and tone controls
  • Single-ply vintage-style pickguard
  • Chrome hardware

Twisted look with a vintage flair

The Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 owes a chunk of its unfamiliar but weirdly familiar look to an ash-veneered poplar body, finished in classic Fender colors. Pushing the aesthetic even further, Squier accentuated the Paranormal Jazz Bass ‘54’s P Bass visage with vintage-style appointments — including a throwback bridge, tuning machines, and synthetic bone nut with a period-authentic look. Moving beyond its appearance, the Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 is an exceptional performer, boasting a fast-playing maple neck, with a 9.5-inch radius fingerboard and 20 narrow tall frets, which is equally suited to frantic double-time punk and vibey walking basslines.

Timeless J Bass tone

Packed with two Fender-designed single-coil alnico pickups, the Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 is a total tone machine. Dual stacked concentric volume and tone controls give you precise soundshaping capability for both pickups, so you can dial in the right tone for any occasion. There’s a reason why J Basses have remained one of the most popular bass guitars for over half of a century — it’s the tone. And, the Paranormal Jazz Bass ’54 delivers it in spades!

The Squier Paranormal Series

To create the Paranormal series, the mad scientists at Squier broke down a selection of Fender’s most popular designs to the atomic level and smashed them together, bringing to life some of the coolest, most aberrant instruments we’ve ever seen. Flipped headstocks, Frankenstein electronics, necks on bodies to which they don’t belong — these guitars and basses break all the rules! So, if you’ve ever desired to chuck a set of P-90s into a La Cabronita, play a Mustang with the voice of a Strat, or own a J Bass dressed up as a P Bass, you’ll love the Squier Paranormal series.

What Fender Says...

The Paranormal Jazz Bass® ’54 turns fiction into reality, combining the easy playability and tonal versatility of the J Bass® with the classic looks of its older sibling, the Precision Bass® (around 1954, the P Bass® transitioned from a slab body to a contoured body). This bass is easy to play thanks to its “C”-shaped neck profile and narrow 1.5” nut width and offers out-of-this-world tone courtesy of its dual Fender-Designed alnico single-coil pickups. Further refinements include a vintage-style bridge and tuning machines, dual concentric volume and tone controls, and a sprawling ’50s-style pickguard that transports the Jazz Bass back in time.

Fender-Designed Alnico Pickups

This model features Fender-Designed alnico single-coil pickups for authentic Fender tone.

Dual Concentric Volume and Tone Controls

Vintage-Style Tuning Machines
