Building off the Electro-Harmonix Freeze and Superego pedals, the Deep Freeze is a superlative sonic sampler and sustainer sure to inspire! Like the original Freeze, this pedal allows you to sample and hold (or freeze, rather) a section of your playing, creating shimmering pads, harmonic backdrops, and more. Three distinct modes provide a seemingly endless level of experimentation, from layered latched chords to momentary melodic whispers to even a mode partially dictated by your playing dynamics. Moreover, the Deep Freeze boasts dedicated Dry/Effect knobs, Glissando, and a multipurpose Speed/Layer knob that changes function based on your mode. And while the Deep Freeze packs far more sonic sculpting control than any previous Freeze pedal, it’s also the smallest one yet — the Deep Freeze features Electro-Harmonix’s Pico-series miniature enclosure, allowing you to pop this pedal onto your ’board while taking up minimal real estate.
In classic Freeze-series fashion, the Electro-Harmonix Deep Freeze boasts three unique modes of operation to swap between.
Latch: When playing in Latch mode, pressing the footswitch will sample and sustain a slice of your sound until the effect is bypassed. This allows you to create shimmering chords and bass pedal notes to play over, and you can also utilize the Deep Freeze’s layering function to create complex multi-sample pads.
Moment: This mode is like Latch, but the freezing effect is only present while the footswitch is actively held down. Adjust the speed control in Moment mode to precisely set your sample’s attack/decay time.
Auto: Finally, Auto mode is the most interactive mode, given it can be operated entirely with your playing! This mode automatically detects signals over a certain threshold, allowing you to control the Deep Freeze’s sampling capabilities through your playing dynamics. Like Moment mode, the Speed control dictates the attack/decay time of your sample in this mode.
Until now, Electro-Harmonix’s Freeze-series pedals have largely been straightforward affairs, often featuring but a single knob and a 3-way switch. The Deep Freeze sound retainer takes a far more in-depth approach, sporting four knobs and a dedicated mode switch to sculpt your sound. From precisely adjusting your wet/dry balance to the Gliss knob’s morph time control to exacting control over attack/decay times, Music Experience guitarists are amazed by the sheer level of control Deep Freeze packs into its Pico-sized enclosure.
Meeting between the original Freeze and Superego pedals is the Pico Deep Freeze Sound Retainer. With the ability to freeze a moment in sound, the Deep Freeze can act as a sustain pedal for holding chords and notes as backing for your playing or as a platform to manipulate your tone into new sounds impossible with a normal guitar. In addition to the original Freeze’s abilities, the Deep Freeze features layering, adjustable attack/decay speeds, glissando, dedicated volume controls, and 3 modes: Latch, Moment, and Auto, making it powerful pedal punching well above its weight. The Deep Freeze allows for instant sound freezing in three modes of operation. Latch freezes sound each time the footswitch is pressed until the effect is bypassed, while Moment mode freezes sound only while the footswitch is held down. Auto mode captured sound automatically each time it senses signal above its threshold for virtually foot-free freezes. These three modes make it easy to operate the Deep Freeze in a way that fits any playing style. Controls on the Deep Freeze let you further tailor the operation of the effect. Separate DRY and EFFECT volume controls let you blend signals from subtle backing to 100% effect experimentation. GLISS adjusts the morph time between freeze sounds creating otherworldly soundscapes. The SPEED/LAYER knob adjusts either the attack/decay time of the effect in Moment and Auto modes, or the amount of layering possible in Latch mode which makes playing impossible chords possible!
