Move over, Rosewood Telecaster — the George Harrison Rocky Stratocaster is an exacting replica of the quiet Beatle's most iconic Fender guitar, right down the Grimwoods sticker on the headstock! The legend goes that one night in 1967, George decided to give his ’61 Sonic Blue Strat a makeover to match the era’s psychedelic spirit, and this limited-edition model nails every last detail. The lightweight alder body is loaded with a trio of vintage-style ’60s Stratocaster pickups that Music Experience guitarists find are perfect for laying down some Rubber Soul-era riffs, while the maple/rosewood neck’s mid-’60s “C” profile and vintage-correct 7.25-inch radius frets remain true to the original. A high-performance 6-string and a collector’s piece all in one, the Fender George Harrison Rocky Stratocaster is a stunning tribute to one of rock music’s most beloved instruments.
Heavily inspired by early rock ’n’ rollers like Buddy Holly, John Lennon and George Harrison purchased their first Fenders, a matching pair of 1961 Sonic Blue Stratocasters, during the Help! sessions in 1965. These guitars featured heavily on the Beatles’ mid-period output, but as the hippy era of free love began to take off, Sonic Blue simply didn’t cut it anymore! In 1967, George stayed up late one night, and, with the help of a few bottles of enamel paint and his wife Pattie Boyd’s nail polish, gave his Strat a psychedelic new look, complete with polka dots, fluorescent swirls, and references to two of his favorite rockers. George dubbed this Strat “Rocky,” and it sits front and center on many of the Beatles’ later works, including the legendary “All You Need Is Love” performance on the world’s first international television broadcast.
This Strat’s mid-’60s “C”-profile maple neck proves that the George Harrison Rocky Stratocaster is much more than a piece of 6-string art! One of the most comfortable neck profiles around, Fender combines this carve with a gorgeous rosewood fingerboard and vintage-correct frets for a smooth, fast feel. Just like George’s original, this Strat features an old-school 7.25-inch radius that’s unmatched when it comes to easy chording — and as George’s playing attests, it’s no slouch when it comes to lead.
From Rubber Soul on, the Strat became one of George’s favorite guitars, and it’s all over the group's mid-period output. The George Harrison Rocky Stratocaster’s trio of vintage-style ‘60s Stratocaster pickups captures this single-coil magic perfectly, providing a round bottom end and bell-like trebles. From the inspired chordal solo on “In My Life” to the iconic “Day Tripper” riff, this Strat’s pickups deliver an incredibly authentic re-creation of some of George’s most famous tones.
George Harrison’s impact and influence on popular music is unparalleled. Known for pushing musical boundaries and sonic experimentation, George’s inventive hooks and groundbreaking tones helped propel the Beatles into legendary status. George played a variety of iconic guitars throughout his career, but the most visually distinctive was his 1961 Sonic Blue Stratocaster, hand-painted in psychedelic Day-Glo colors and affectionately named “Rocky.” George acquired the guitar in 1965 and first used it on the Beatles’ Rubber Soul album and continued to play it extensively on subsequent recordings including Revolver, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour and the White Album. The George Harrison Rocky Stratocaster features an alder body lovingly hand-painted with a replica of Harrison's famous psychedelic brushstrokes. Every last detail is captured, from the artwork on the pickguard and plastic parts to a replica decal on the back of headstock from Grimwoods - the original music store where the guitar was purchased. A trio of vintage-style ‘60s Stratocaster pickups sing with dynamic, crystalline tone that hearkens back to Fender's golden age. A Mid-’60s “C”- shape maple neck with a 7.25” radius slab rosewood fingerboard and 21 vintage-style frets offers a familiar neck profile with a comfortable feel. Finally, the Rocky Strat features a vintage-style synchronized tremolo and tuners which provide the look and feel of a classic Fender instrument.
A classic Fender tone wood, alder’s sound is balanced with equal doses of lows, mids and highs.
The psychedelic finish is painted by hand, just like Harrison’s original “Rocky”.
Remarkably comfortable, the mid "’60s C"-shaped neck profile is sculpted for a vintage-style playing feel—a perfectly rounded shape that’s thinner at the first fret, thicker at the twelfth.
Hosting 21 vintage-style frets, the 7.25”-radius slab rosewood fingerboard provides the comfortable playing feel of a vintage instrument.
One of our most innovative designs, this six-point tremolo offers proper intonation, full adjustability and easy access to vibrato sounds.
These ‘60s-era pickups produce vintage-accurate tones full of the bell-like, crystalline timbre that made Fender instruments famous.
