Since 2001, Luke Hoskin has been a critical force in the artistic trajectory and unrelenting riffs of Canadian mathcore/prog-metal collective Protest the Hero. Though Hoskin would only become a bona fide member in 2021, he’s remained integral to the band’s live performances since the early days. As such, he needed a guitar up to the task of tearing up the stage night after night, and one that is capable of enduring the break-neck diversity of the band’s creative and sonic offerings. Enter his Ibanez LHMI1 signature electric guitar. The 3-piece maple neck is reinforced by KTS titanium rods, boasting an ebony fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets. A flamed maple-topped nyatoh body is embedded with active Fishman Fluence humbuckers, designed to handle a wealth of playstyles, including a push-pull voicing switch on the volume knob. And no matter what type of sonic mayhem you dish out, Gotoh MG-T locking tuners ensure even your most searing licks won’t go out of tune.
Sonorous voicing The luthiers at Ibanez applied their expertise to engineer an ideal shred machine. Its body features a 4mm flamed maple top, known for its reflective and powerful projection, in addition to its penchant for blending tight highs with saccharine lows. Underneath is the nyatoh body, maintaining a bright profile with solid mids and a healthy dose of blooming overtones for great harmonics. A 3-piece maple neck delivers tremendous articulation, remaining clear in every register with wonderful balance. An ebony fingerboard will have your sounds singing, imbuing your tones with unmatched sustain, shimmering trebles, potent basses, and rich mids. Taken together, Music Experience’s guitar pros are impressed with the masterful blend of tonewoods that accommodate numerous styles, while ensuring the hottest licks never get lost in the sonic muck.
In addition to being light in weight, the 3-piece maple neck is especially resilient to twisting and warping, reducing the frequency of maintenance and making it an excellent feature for any gigging artist on the road. Ibanez’s vaunted Wizard neck profile is ultra-slick and lightning fast, with a thickness of just 18mm at the first fret and 20mm at the 12th. With 24 frets sprawling a 15.75-inch fingerboard radius, this signature axe is precision engineered to shred. Plus, stable tones and reliable intonation are a given, thanks to the lightweight KTS titanium rods, blending stability and flexibility with enough heft to feel solid in-hand, minus the weight.
What good are all these features without the proper electronics and hardware to get the job done? Fortunately, Ibanez and Luke Hoskin opted for a pair of active Fishman Fluence humbuckers to capture your sound. Ceramic in bridge and alnico in the neck, these pickups offer tremendous articulation with round, full-bodied sound up top, and tight, searing tones down low. What’s more, these pickups are enabled with a multi-voicing mode, toggled with the volume knob. This engages the pickups into a passive mode, brimming with responsive, organic character that won’t pull their punches when you turn them up. Gotoh MG-T locking tuners and a Gibraltar Standard II bridge bookend the strings, ensuring your tones are in tune and your tunes are never short on tone.
"I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to test-drive many Ibanez guitars over the years. Each and every guitar is special in its own right and inspiring for different reasons. This one, though, feels complete. Every last detail is refined to exactly what I need in an instrument; nothing more and certainly nothing less. I feel comfortable saying that this is my favourite guitar I have had the privilege of slinging over my shoulder, and one that I am very proud to have played a part in creating!"
