Make Pristine Recordings with This Low-noise Microphone
The Neumann TLM 103 large-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone features a capsule derived from the legendary U 87, combined with transformerless circuitry for the classic Neumann sound. Its exceptionally low self-noise makes it ideal for professional and project studios, excelling in classical recordings with wide dynamic range, sampling of very low-level sources, and Foley work. Robust enough for live use, the TLM 103 has even been trusted on stage by artists such as Jack White for miking guitar amplifiers.
Cardioid Pattern to Limit Bleed
The cardioid TLM 103 employs a proven transformerless circuit found in high-end Neumann microphones to achieve ultra-low self-noise and extremely high SPL handling. By focusing on the cardioid pattern used in most recording situations, unwanted rear sound is effectively attenuated while off-axis sources are reproduced naturally. This results in improved isolation and excellent feedback suppression, making the TLM 103 suitable for both studio and live applications.
Classic Design for Transparent Sound
Addressed from the front and marked by the iconic red Neumann logo, the TLM 103 uses the K 103 large-diaphragm capsule based on the renowned K 87 from the U 67 and U 87 microphones. The capsule delivers a flat frequency response up to approximately 5kHz, followed by a broad 4dB presence boost. Its wire mesh headgrille protects against plosives without relying on corrective resonance, preserving excellent impulse response and natural, uncolored reproduction of music and speech.
Neumann’s Transformerless (TLM) Technology
TLM stands for “transformerless microphone,” where the traditional output transformer is replaced by an advanced electronic circuit. This design maintains effective common-mode rejection and protects against RF interference while preserving a balanced audio signal. The result is exceptionally clean, detailed audio performance with a wide dynamic range, allowing the TLM 103 to capture everything from the quietest nuances to sound pressure levels up to 138dB without distortion.
