The Legend Continues

At Music Experience, the name Neve commands reverence. Rupert Neve started designing audio equipment in the tube console era but made his mark with solid-state designs. Setting up shop in Little Shelford in the ’60s, Mr. Neve faced many obstacles establishing his brand amid a new technological landscape. Transistors were new, expensive, and difficult to obtain in quantity in the UK. Reliable faders didn’t exist yet — a far cry from today’s world, where parts are affordable and readily available from multiple suppliers, all competing to win bids. Nevertheless, Rupert persisted. And by the early 1970s, the Neve company was humming along, taking orders and building custom transformer-balanced consoles for recording and broadcast studios the world over.

Neve 80-series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined the sound of ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios were installing Neve desks as fast as they as fast as they could. By 1978, with the introduction of the majestic 8078 — the pinnacle of handwired analog “production” consoles — and NECAM automation system, Neve boards were the main component of the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. In the decades since, AMS Neve has innovated with groundbreaking products such as the VR, VX, and 88R series consoles. The 1073® with a Modern Twist

Designed and built in England, the modern-day 1073N is the perfect choice for producers looking to access classic Neve® sound in a true-to-form 80-series module. Constructed to exacting original specifications, the 1073N can replace vintage modules housed in legendary 1970s Neve® consoles using the gold-plated 18-pin rear connector. The 1073N is a horizontal module and can be racked together as a stereo pair in the Neve 3U stereo rack, or used by itself in standalone mode.

A major advantage of the 1073N is the ability to operate completely standalone without a console or rack. Featuring an independent external PSU, XLR connections, and a protective metal casing, this classic preamp can be used anywhere in the studio or taken on the road — delivering uncompromising quality anytime, anywhere. The unit also includes an independent DI circuit with earth lift and a -20dB pad, making it ideal for recording instruments directly into the 1073N.

Exclusive Marinair® transformers are employed on the microphone input, line input, and output stage to ensure authentic Neve 1073® tone throughout. The 1073N retains the discrete Class A topology that made the original famous, while incorporating modern production techniques, including proprietary in-house SMT manufacturing. Crucially, the discrete audio path still uses traditional through-hole construction, including the mounting of Marinair® transformers and Class A transistor-based amplifiers.

Just like the original 1073®, the 1073N uses custom hand-wound inductors manufactured exclusively in the UK. Its 3-band inductor-based EQ delivers musical results across the spectrum, with a mid bell-curve band offering ideal presence ranges for male and female vocals with ±18dB of gain, alongside high and low shelving bands offering ±16dB gain. The classic 5dB stepped Elma switch provides precise gain control across the full range, eliminating the need for a separate mic/line switch by allowing the gain control to select the input stage directly.

Three distinct gain stages are delivered via two independent transistor-based preamplifiers, providing high gain for DI, line, or microphone signals. The 1073® preamp offers up to 80dB of microphone gain, and by combining multiple gain stages, the 1073N achieves the musical drive and harmonic saturation for which the 1073 is renowned. A 180-degree phase flip feature is invaluable in multi-microphone setups, such as top and bottom snare miking.

With selectable impedance settings of 1.2kΩ and 300Ω, the 1073N can be optimised for use with a wide range of modern and vintage microphones, ensuring maximum performance and tonal flexibility in any recording scenario.
