The 1073SPX-D combines the legendary 1073® preamp with a powerful digital audio interface, featuring both USB and ADAT connectivity. This integration transforms the 1073SPX-D into a versatile all-in-one solution for recording, mixing, and monitoring, suitable for studio, live sound, or mobile setups. With nine inputs (1 analog and 8 ADAT) and twelve outputs (4 analog and 8 ADAT), the 1073SPX-D can serve as the centerpiece of any studio, connecting all your tools to your DAW through a single interface.

The innovative USB digital interface uses class-compliant drivers for plug-and-play setup on both PC and Mac, allowing full access to the unit’s analog features directly within your DAW. ADAT ports function in two modes: USB/ADAT hub mode connects multiple units (like the 1073OPX or additional 1073SPX-D units) for expanded recording and monitoring capabilities, while ADAT Audio Expander mode allows the 1073SPX-D to integrate a complete 1073 channel strip into an existing ADAT-equipped interface.

By routing any DAW track through the 1073SPX-D, users can utilize the classic analog circuitry — including Marinair transformers and inductor-based EQ — before returning audio via USB or ADAT. Monitoring is fully integrated, allowing studio loudspeakers and headphones to connect directly to the unit, with attenuation and speaker cut options for precise control. Two stereo DAW sources can be blended with the 1073SPX-D signals for latency-free monitoring.

Maintaining discrete Class-A topology and exclusive Marinair transformers at input and output stages, the 1073SPX-D delivers the authentic 1073 sound. Modern SMT production is combined with traditional through-hole construction, hand-mounting transformers and Class-A transistor-based amplifiers. The 5dB stepped Elma gain switch allows precise control without a separate mic/line switch, and three gain stages ensure optimal performance for DI, line, or mic inputs.

The three-band inductor-based EQ is designed for musicality, with hand-wound UK-made inductors selected by Rupert Neve and his engineering team to exceed strict 1073 specifications. Flexible analog I/O accommodates all workflows, with switchable front and rear connections, a balanced insert send/return loop, and a rotary output fader (-∞ to +5dB) providing total control over the unit’s output via XLR.
