The AMS Neve 2254/R is an authentic re-creation of one of recording history’s most revered limiter/compressors. Handbuilt in Burnley, England, it delivers the elegant and unmistakably musical Neve sound that engineers have trusted for decades. Featuring four iron-core Neve Marinair specification transformers, a diode-bridge VCA, and a BA283 amplifier circuit — the same design found in the iconic 1073 preamp — the 2254/R is a true hardware classic. More than a vintage reissue, it includes modern enhancements such as Neve’s Total Recall software and a rack-friendly 1U format, combining timeless tone with contemporary workflow convenience.
Originally introduced in 1969, the Neve 2254 limiter/compressor appeared on countless hit records throughout the 1970s and beyond. Known for its distinctive tone and straightforward operation, it delivers musical dynamic control on everything from vocals to drum overheads. Based on the 2254/E iteration, the 2254/R preserves the legendary circuit topology while adding practical modern updates, including a 19-inch 1U rack footprint and USB connectivity for integration with Neve’s proprietary Total Recall software.
The 2254/R features a limiter and compressor that can be used independently or in series, giving engineers exceptional flexibility. The brickwall-style limiter prevents clipping during tracking and controls aggressive transients in mixdown, with stepped recovery times at 100ms, 200ms, and 800ms, plus an AUTO mode that adapts to the source material. It offers a fixed 5ms default slow attack and an optional fast attack mode with continuously variable speeds between 100ms and 2ms.
The compressor section includes five ratio settings (1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 6:1), a threshold range from –20dB to +10dB, gain makeup control, and recovery options at 400ms, 800ms, 1.5s, and AUTO. Whether applying subtle dynamic shaping or aggressive, pumping compression, the 2254/R provides precise and musical control.
A powerful modern enhancement, Neve Total Recall allows you to save, load, and manage presets with ease. Via USB connection, the included software captures hardware settings for accurate A/B comparisons and streamlined workflow management. While the software does not physically control the unit, it provides detailed visual feedback to ensure the hardware’s knob positions match stored presets — offering plug-in style convenience while maintaining the unmistakable sound of analog hardware.
The Neve name commands global respect in professional audio. Rupert Neve began designing equipment in the tube console era before pioneering solid-state innovations in the 1960s. Despite early technological challenges, his dedication led to the creation of transformer-balanced consoles that defined the sound of 1970s rock. The renowned 80 Series consoles became studio staples worldwide, culminating in the introduction of the legendary 8078 and NECAM automation system. Today, AMS Neve continues to build on that legacy with innovative, world-class audio equipment that blends analog heritage with modern precision.
Designed in 1969, the original Neve® 2254 mono Limiter/Compressor quickly earned legendary status in professional studios worldwide. Four decades later, the Neve 2254/R mono limiter/compressor stands as its modern successor — preserving the revered diode-bridge design while advancing it for today’s production environments. From the earliest 2252 diode-bridge compressor through the cubic 2254 modules, Neve® compressors have long been treasured studio essentials. The 2254/R carries this celebrated circuit into the 21st century with a modern 19″ rack format for seamless studio integration.
At the heart of the 2254/R are exclusive Marinair® specification transformers on the input, bridge-driver, sidechain, and output stages, delivering the sweet, harmonically rich tone that defined the classic 2254 sound. The original 2254, along with its predecessors the 2252 and 2253, pioneered the use of diode electrical properties within control circuits to create musical compression curves. Rupert Neve’s innovative bridge configuration significantly reduced distortion, allowing for carefully controlled voltages and ideal compression characteristics. As a result, the 2254/R offers a broad compression range — from subtle and smooth control to aggressive, overdriven character.
While modern in construction, the 2254/R remains faithful to the original 1969/1970s models, utilizing Class A discrete circuitry throughout the audio path, including a discrete transformer-balanced output derived from early Neve® console line modules. Multiple units can be linked via a control voltage link, sharing a common sidechain so that the loudest signal triggers gain reduction across all linked units. Independent compressor and limiter sidechains operate as closed loops, enabling precise transient control and making the 2254/R a powerful creative tool in any studio.
An enhancement over the original design, the 2254/R includes a sweepable fast attack control for the limiter, ranging from 2ms to 100µs, allowing exact attack tailoring for any source. A classic moving coil meter can monitor input, output, and gain reduction stages, complemented by a dual-colour LED indicator for -10dBu signal presence and +25dBu clipping. Both limiter and compressor circuits offer multiple recovery options, including an AUTO mode with composite, self-adjusting attack and release times. In AUTO, response speeds remain fast for isolated peaks while slowing for sustained levels, preserving natural dynamic range as audio rides on a smoothly shifting gain platform.
Every control setting on the 2254/R can be recalled within seconds using the Neve® Recall Software application. Simply connect the unit to your DAW computer via USB to access the software and manage your saved configurations with ease.
