The Neve name has long commanded reverence in professional audio. Rupert Neve began designing equipment during the tube console era and later made his mark with groundbreaking solid-state designs. Establishing operations in Little Shelford in the 1960s, he overcame significant technological and supply challenges, including limited transistor availability and the absence of reliable faders. Despite these obstacles, Neve persevered, and by the early 1970s, the company was producing custom transformer-balanced consoles for leading recording and broadcast studios worldwide.

The iconic 80-series consoles became known for their huge, punchy, authoritative sound that helped define 1970s rock. With the introduction of the 8078 console and NECAM automation system in 1978, Neve solidified its reputation as a cornerstone of world-class recording studios. Not every studio has the space for the legendary Neve® 88RS console, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on world-class sound. The 88RLB 500 Series Mono Mic Preamp brings the unmistakable tone, clarity, and depth of the iconic 88RS console into a compact 500-series format, giving studios of any size access to premium Neve® recording quality.

For over two decades, the 88R console has played a pivotal role in producing countless hit records and film scores. The 88RLB carries forward this legacy by utilising the same preamp circuitry and components found in the 88RS console. At its core is a custom-specification Marinair® transformer, balancing the microphone input stage and delivering subtle warmth and musical tonality while maintaining outstanding transparency across a wide frequency range.

Offering up to 70dB of microphone gain through its transformer-balanced input, the 88RLB ensures pristine signal capture. The signal then passes through an electronically balanced output stage, preserving clarity when connecting to audio interfaces, analogue outboard equipment, or tape machines. Three combined inputs provide exceptional versatility, accommodating dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones, line-level sources such as synthesizers and drum machines, and high-impedance instruments.

The innovative Re-Gen function expands the classic 88RS preamp capabilities by routing line and DI signals through the Marinair® transformer, adding signature Neve® console colouration at the push of a button. A variable high-pass filter, sweeping from 31.5Hz to 315Hz, allows precise control of low-frequency content, making it ideal for tightening up higher-register instruments and removing unwanted bass rumble.

Intelligent phantom power switching ensures +48V is supplied only to the microphone input, protecting line and DI equipment from accidental damage. Additional professional features include a -20dB pad and 180-degree phase invert switch, both usable across mic, line, and DI inputs. Designed for seamless studio integration, the 88RLB can be permanently patched via rear connections, while the switchable front input allows for quick and convenient direct access when inspiration strikes.
