The Essential 1980s Digital Reverb for 500-series

Originally launched in 1982 as a powerful evolution of the AMS DMX15R — the world’s first microprocessor-controlled, full-bandwidth digital reverb — the RMX16 quickly became a studio staple. Embraced by groundbreaking artists throughout the 1980s, it defined the sound of an era. The AMS Neve RMX16 500 Series brings this iconic digital reverb into a compact 500-series module, delivering all the original programs with a hands-on, tactile interface.

From lush chorusing and explosive nonlinear reverbs to expansive ambience and classic echo effects, the RMX16 is packed with instantly recognisable sounds. It excels at creating massive drums, shimmering guitars, saturated synth textures, and haunting vocal spaces. While rooted in vintage character, the RMX16 offers the flexibility and control required for modern productions, making it a powerful and inspiring sound design tool.

Familiar Look and Feel in a Compact Format

The RMX16 500 Series retains the iconic alphanumeric keypad, distinctive aluminium control knob, and monochromatic red display of the original unit. This intuitive interface encourages deep parameter editing, allowing you to shape decay time, pre-delay, decay filter, wet/dry mix, and fine-tune settings using the unique nudge controls. Once you’ve crafted your signature reverb, save it to one of 100 user memory slots for instant recall.

18 Classic Program Sounds

The RMX16 includes all nine original programs along with nine additional custom programs introduced with the later remote unit, giving you a total of 18 legendary effects:

  • Ambience
  • Room
  • Hall
  • Plate
  • Chorus
  • Echo
  • Nonlinear
  • Reverse
  • Freeze
  • Delay
  • Image

The Legend Continues

The Neve name has long been synonymous with excellence in professional audio. Rupert Neve began designing equipment during the tube console era before pioneering solid-state console technology in the 1960s. Despite technical and supply challenges of the time, his commitment to innovation led to transformer-balanced consoles that shaped recording studios worldwide.

The revered 80-series consoles helped define the sound of 1970s rock with their bold, punchy character. With the introduction of the 8078 console and NECAM automation, Neve solidified its place in world-class studios. In the decades since, AMS Neve has continued pushing boundaries with renowned console series such as the VR, VX, and 88R. Today, the company remains at the forefront of professional audio, combining classic heritage with cutting-edge digital innovation.

What Neve Says...

Iconic 1980s Digital Reverb — Reborn for 500 Series

The world’s first microprocessor-controlled, full-bandwidth digital reverberator shaped countless landmark recordings from the 1980s onward — and now it has been expertly adapted for 500-series format. The RMX16 500 Series uses the exact bit-for-bit algorithms from the original 1982 unit, delivering unmistakable, authentic 1980s effects with stunning accuracy.

A high-contrast OLED display makes navigating programs and adjusting parameters straightforward and intuitive, eliminating complex menus so you can stay focused on creativity. Powered by modern 32-bit DSP and 24-bit/48kHz sampling through premium AD/DA converters, the RMX16 500 delivers over 100dB of dynamic range with 22dB of headroom. This transparent, high-resolution platform perfectly models the sonic character and digital behaviour of the original hardware.

All nine original programs are included — from the legendary Non-Lin reverb to the widely used Ambience setting — along with nine additional rare aftermarket algorithms, bringing the total to 18 distinctive programs ready to enhance and shape your productions. Unlike the original “all-or-nothing” wet-only design, the RMX16 500 adds a wet/dry mix control, allowing it to function seamlessly as an insert during tracking or mixing.

The classic calculator-style keypad remains central to the experience, enabling precise control of decay time, pre-delay, and filter levels, while also allowing you to save and recall custom presets. An endless rotary encoder provides fluid navigation through programs and parameters, offering real-time adjustment while monitoring results. Faithfully modelled input and output stages replicate the sonic response of the original RMX16, with digitally controlled I/O levels from 0–100% for accurate gain staging. With 100 user-defined preset locations available via the intuitive save/load system, the RMX16 500 makes it easy to craft, store, and instantly recall your own signature reverb sounds.
