The Radial J48 is an active direct box designed to work efficiently within the limited current supplied by 48-Volt phantom power, while still delivering the pure and natural sound of the instrument. A unique switch-mode supply boosts the internal voltage rails, allowing an input signal of up to 10V with no noticeable distortion.
The J48’s primary design goal was massive headroom without sacrificing sound quality. Phantom power is converted using an ultra-efficient digital switch-mode supply that steps the internal rail voltage up to 10 volts. This allows the J48 to handle signals up to 9 volts without choking. To maximize available power, non-essential components such as LEDs are disabled during operation, reserving energy for the audio circuit.
Inside the J48 are oversized capacitors providing ample current storage for clean, unobstructed power. Increased headroom results in dramatically lower phase distortion, significantly reduced harmonic distortion, and extremely low inter-modulation distortion. These engineering choices lead to superior audio performance.
In addition to great tone, the J48 introduces functions that enhance creativity and flexibility. Alongside the standard 1/4" input and thru connections, the Merge function converts the thru output into a second input. This sums stereo sources such as keyboards or CD players into mono, ideal when mixer inputs are limited. A -15dB pad is also available for high-output instruments.
To tame low-end rumble and excessive resonance, the J48 includes an 80Hz high-pass filter. Since low frequencies consume far more RMS power, removing unnecessary lows increases dynamic handling by 3dB — doubling the available headroom. This both cleans up the sound and improves system stability.
